Every Piping Designer needs to know the best way to break lines on a P&ID (Piping and Instrumentation Diagram) or PFD (Process Flow Diagram). This is a crucial skill!
There are two schools of thought on this subject. One being that no matter what, you simply break the vertical lines. However, the more widely adopted method is based on a
hierarchy, which is shown below. If you don't believe me, then try using CADWorx P&ID software, which has it built into the system to automatically break lines based on the hierarchy! They decided to take this approach because their research into engineering companies determined this was the most widely used and accepted method for drafting P&ID's.
The hierarchy method is preferred because it allows the primary lines, and the secondary lines to stand out better on the drawing, making the main process a lot easier to follow for the user.
